In the fall of 2016, Landon began its first comprehensive goal-setting exercise in a decade. The 2018 Strategic Plan that resulted from this exercise challenges us to grow as a school and live into our mission to the fullest. It is focused on six key areas: academics, character, faculty, campus, resources, and community.

We spent a year developing the six goals and associated action steps that make up the plan. The process included commentary from hundreds of community members and engagement by a 35-person committee whose voices represented a wide array of Landon constituencies and viewpoints. Our Board of Trustees approved the plan in 2017 and it was launched formally in early 2018.

In 2017 Landon hired the architectural firm Cox Graae and Spack to help lead an exercise that resulted in a Campus Master Plan (CMP), developed pursuant to one of the six strategic goals laid out in the 2018 Strategic Plan. Those goals are academics, character, faculty, campus, resources, and community. The CMP aligns with Strategic Plan Goal Four, which calls on us to “Renovate, revitalize, and preserve our exceptional buildings and grounds to support current and future program needs.”

The CMP recommends areas for improvement to the overall campus, both buildings and grounds, and provides a long-term multi-phased vision for our campus in alignment with capital planning. Our current focus is on Phases 0 and 1 of the Campus Master Plan, which include the following projects:

• Construction of a new fence along Wilson Lane and relocation of the security booth nearer the Wilson Lane entrance.
• Re-routing of the vehicular road around the perimeter of the campus, protecting pedestrian traffic in the center of campus.
• Construction of new upper school facility, major renovation of the current upper school (Banfield Academic Center), and smaller renovations to the current middle and lower school buildings.  With this, we will also make a change to the Divisional alignment, such that the Lower School will be grades 3-6 and move into the current middle school building; the Middle School will be grades 7-8 and move into the renovated BAC; and the Upper School will use spaces in the renovated BAC as well as the new upper school facility. The existing lower school building (Wilson Building) will become a visual arts center.
• Relocation of Andrews House.

The Campaign for Landon School has three distinct components to raise $50 million over five years. Those goals are:

• Capital - $30 Million Goal: To support new and renovated facilities.
• Endowment - $10 million goal:  To ensure long-term financial sustainability.
• Annual Giving - $10 million goal:  To support ongoing operations.

As of the public launch of The Campaign for Landon on October 15, 2021, we have raised approximately $32 million in gifts and pledge commitments towards the overall $50 million goal. Landon needs the support of the entire Landon community to meet The Campaign for Landon goals.

Phase 0 - Roadway, front entrance, and new security booth and gate

• Zoning Complete –September 2021

Phase 1A - Relocate Andrews House, build temporary roadway from the Bradley Boulevard entrance to the Stadium and around outside of the BAC, remove the roadway between Torrey Hall and Andrews House, and adjust the topography for the new upper school building. Begin BAC addition.

• Design Complete – January 2022
• Permits Complete – April 2022
• Construction Start – June 2022. Ideally, will begin mobilization, trailer set up, and pre sediment erosion control meetings in May 2022. We are currently building out a schedule that includes the Andrews House renovation once the relocation is complete. We will base Andrews House re-occupancy on that schedule.
• Construction Complete –September 2022 

Phase 1B - Construct a new courtyard and additional shells to the BAC addition, construct the new upper school building, new quad pathways, and construct bear circle

• Phase 1B Construction Start – June 2022. Plan is to begin mobilization, trailer set up, and pre sediment erosion control meetings in May 2022.
• Phase 1B BAC Addition Shell Complete – February 2023
• Phase 1B Upper School Construction Complete – August 2023

Phase 1C – Fully renovate the BAC and interior construction of the BAC addition, renovate the Wilson building, and renovate the existing middle school building to become the new lower school building

• Phase 1C Construction Start - June 2023
• Phase 1C Construction Completion – August/September 2023

Landon’s academic facilities need to be refreshed to support the overall level of instruction by the faculty, the academic experience of the boys, and the general quality of the spaces.  The last major academic renovation was 20 years ago, and systems are old and dated.  In addition, we need more space per student, especially in the Middle and Upper Schools, including upgraded common spaces for the boys to gather. By building a new, state of the art Upper School facility, moving the Middle School students into a newly renovated Upper School building, and moving the Lower School students into the most recently constructed Middle School building, which itself will be renovated, we will accomplish all of these goals within a single 15-month period to enable the school to live meaningfully into its next generations.  In addition, we create additional space for the arts in a renovated lower school building that lends itself nicely towards this curricular area.  We also remove significant deferred maintenance from our books in a single move, freeing up annual capital budgets for other projects around campus.

We have thoughtfully planned to minimize disruption to the boys and teachers. There will be no trailer classrooms utilized.  We have sequenced the project so the boys and the teachers will remain in the academic spaces until we can officially move them to a completed new or renovated facility.

Carpool will start to be affected from February 2022 to May 2022 as we construct the new entry, during which time we will have a one-way entry on Wilson and traffic patterns will be redesigned.  After that, once the two-lane entry is redesigned, there will be other interruptions to traffic flow during construction of the upper school. Landon school administrators are working with the construction team to anticipate and minimize disruptions to the community.
